Book Nib
Do you need to draw manga with Nib pens only?
I got this book on how to draw manga, im actualy pretty good, but still not to good.
Anyways, in the materials part it said to use Nib pens, or Dip pens. So I went out and bout one for like 10 bucks.
With ink and everything. The brand was speedball, and its a little plastic tube thing, and you stick the nib in there, so when I got home and tried it out, i was dissaponinted, all it did was scratch the paper, scratch, scratch and scratch is all I heard, so I dipped it again, and it still only scratched the paper, so I cleaned it and re-dipped it, but still would not ink.
So I was wondering if we really need to use this kind of pen, could I use a Ball point pen instead?
Maybe I was not holding the pen right, can someone tell me how to use this kind of pen, cause I cant return it, I threw the ticket and the Case away.

Ah, you must have gotten the really good ones if there is a case…I don’t use speedball, so I wouldn’t know if its good.
Ah well,
1st, no ball point pen. Its unprofessional. It won’t give sharp lines.
2nd, You have to hold it at a certain angle about 20 to 25 degrees from the paper to the Nib pen. NO going any higher than that.
3rd, expect to refill very soon as the ink is not exactly collected into a tube like other pens.
4th, ah yes…I have heard that a new nib happens to be a little sharp to do certain things like hair…depends on the brand. If it still scratches use it as practice to ink straight, circular or wavy lines to practice with the pen and making it a little blunt. And…if your Nib becomes bended it means its ruined.
5th Each Nib have different functions like the G-pen.
G-pen= It can have thin or thicker strokes so its flexible but it very hard to control. Only suitable to those that uses their hands lightly on the paper.
Kabura-pen= For the people with heavy hands. Thin lines and modulated lines.
Maru-pen= Can create thicker and thinner lines than the above two. This Nib is for technicians (skilled in applying pressure to pencil or pen) My favourite for details.

Another pen like the technical pen won’t need refilling sooo much but not much variant in line depth…its possible to create thicker lines by adding more strokes to the line but it will take some time…and the lines will tend to be thicker than japanese lines you see in their manga.
Lastly the brush, from what I can gather, I can do anything with this brush (except making extremely long lines like a technical pen does) but…it will take years (Some american Marvel artist said 3years). And that’s only if I keep at it every single day…Oh, an artificial brush doesn’t bounce like a real sable one does. So best to get a sable. You won’t need to refill as much as a Nib pen does…
